Vallée des Merveilles
In the heart of the Mercantour National Park, near Tende, the Valley of Wonders is a spectacular mountain landscape of alpine lakes, rocky peaks and wide open meadows. Its greatest treasure, however, is carved into the rock: tens of thousands of prehistoric engravings, most of them dating from the Late Neolithic to the Bronze Age, several thousand years ago. Visitors can discover human figures, weapons, geometric patterns and intriguing horn-shaped motifs, often interpreted as representations of cattle. Mount Bégo, rising to 2,872 metres, overlooks this remarkable archaeological site, which is listed as a Historic Monument. Hiking through this extraordinary landscape feels like stepping back in time! The descriptions provided are for guidance only and are not exhaustive. Access conditions, trail difficulty, required equipment, swimming opportunities, as well as opening hours and visiting arrangements at heritage sites may vary depending on the season, weather conditions or local regulations.
